Decompression
We found out we were angry, sad, depressed, suicidal, frustrated, lonely, and felt bipolar. Hypervigilance didn’t show up in our EDC, rather in a driven need to do a thing, too many hobbies or interests. We alienated our families feeling them slip between our fingers. All of that created immense pressure. If you have even a fraction of that, you need to decompress. If you don’t you will end up dead or worst case, crushed and useless a non-contributing member of society without purpose. Decompress with us. The pressure never ends, so you have to build in relief valves.
Reality
This implies that we can’t do this alone. There is no way we fight as a lone operator without support no matter how bad ass we were. Someone was tasked as the hatchet team to come get us in the evasion corridor. If you’re reading this, we are tasked to get you back to safety, debrief, refit, and redeploy you. It’ll buff out, it’ll reload, and there’s still air in the tires. But you’ve got to show up to get fixed up if you want to stay in the fight.
Honesty
We have to admit that if it ain’t working, there’s a problem and it’s probably us. We are not like the rest of the world, it’s fine “…and never the twain shall meet” (Rudyard Kipling, 1892). If we are honest about the problem, we can devise a solution and end the insanity we find ourselves trapped in.
Respect
You do you. Live and let live. Other tropes of the same vein. We came up with respect in the service, we don’t really get it outside, and the country is redefining what all of that means. We don’t care. Respect is respect and you’ll get it from us if we get it from you. Unlike everyone not us, we know what you’ve accomplished to be the person you are and what that took. We respect that.
